PPP connections are connections such as modem connections, Integrated Services Digital Network ISDN connections, or direct cable connections over null serial cable or over parallel cable.
Use the methods in this article to edit the registry to modify the MTU size settings. If you experience any problems or any performance-related issues after you modify the MTU size settings, remove the registry keys that you added.
This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. TCP will try to send these segments if several retransmissions of a segment go unacknowledged. If a segment is acknowledged, the maximum segment size MSS will be reduced and the Don't Fragment bit will be set in future packets on the connection.
This method is preferred because the packet size is lowered for only the problematic segment. Black hole detection increases the maximum number of retransmissions for a specific segment. To enable PMTU black hole detection, follow these steps:. Click Start , click Run , type regedit, and then click OK. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK. This enables the routers to fragment the packet and send the packet across the networks. This method affects packets sent to all destinations.
Most of the time, the performance will be at acceptable levels with a packet size of In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK. If you set the MTU size for a network interface manually, this setting overrides the default MTU for the network interface. The MTU size is the maximum packet size in bytes that the transport will transmit over the underlying network. All rights reserved. Covered by US Patent. Welcome to our community! I've tried troubleshooting it, and narrows it to the web server's MTU problem. I tried lowering the public interface in mikrotik to , but now the ICMP fragmentation needed comes from the router not from the modem and STILL my web server tries to resend bytes packets. Looks like changing the registry key have no effects at all.

I just leave it at whatever the default is and make any necessary changes usually to allow for VPN overhead on the router. Maybe you have some reason for wanting to do it that's over my head, though..
